House in Santo Antônio Square

Sete Lagoas/MG

Description:Casa à Praça Santo Antonio (House in Santo Antônio Square) is located at 94, Santo Antônio Square, in the city of Sete Lagoas. Due to the lack of documentation, it is impossible to date the construction of this monument of unknown authorship. It was presumably built in the first half of the 19th. It is a rare reminiscent of the architecture of traditional rural residences. The plan scheme and other details are not similar to floor plans found, for example, in Amarantina and Manso, both in the state of Minas Gerais, which are typical of São Paulo. The building, known as ‘Venda Grande’ or ‘Sete Lagoas Farm’, is made of wood and mud walls with a large hip roof. The entrance has a balcony between two wooden columns, with chamfered edges and low walls for protection. Wide doors give access to the House. They have straight lintels, as do all the other voids. The rectangular floor plan includes an annex in the rear, which disfigured the primitive covering shape. Inside, the many rooms have floorboard, flag stone or tile fragments paving, and the ceilings are matted, stuccoed or even without boarding.

Situation:This House belongs to the Sete Lagoas Town Hall and does not maintain its original use. Currently, it is the City Museum. In 1968, the building fell into ruins; so, some restorations were carried out in 1969 by IPHAN in partnership with the Sete Lagoas Town Hall and the Ministry of Culture and Education. According to the data from a fieldwork done in 2003, this building is in a good state of conservation.

Inventory information:This monument was listed on August 14, 1968, process 588-T-58, registration number 415, in the Historical Book, vol.1, p. 67.
